"How would you describe yourself?"
That's the big question that even the most experienced person finds difficult answering. But - here's my take.
I'm Horace, I was born in Auckland, New Zealand with my mother from Hong Kong and father from Malaysia. Having learnt that my immigrant parents came from nothing, and giving me everything without worries, I decided at a very young age that I was to be "successful." Today, I'm still finding what that word means.
I have been to 2 public schools and 2 private schools, eventually graduating from ACG Parnell College, with Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) qualifications, 6 months earlier than others in my cohort and starting to study in the University of Auckland where I am now. Currently, I'm studying a triple major in Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Science majoring in finance, management and computer science.
I'm an ambitious person, striving to do as much as I can, effectively and efficiently. I'm also a people's person, working on creating long lasting relationships with others. I'm a learner - constantly trying to develop myself as well as learn from others. And finally, right now - I'm in search for my next journey in life (Looking for a job).
Keeping fit, communication skills, well-spoken, and keeping up with the Joneses. I have been fortunate enough to model for Samsung, Barkers, Hallensteins, Specsavers and The Warehouse; to name a few.
Think fast, be organised, multitask and have the emotional intelligence. These were all needed when working in a busy high-end Japanese restaurant. It was both rewarding and fun being able to help and serve customers and seeing them smile.
Analytical, professionalism, fast thinker, research skills, accuracy... The list goes on and being a law clerk has been rewarding yet hard work! Being responsible for keeping files in database up-to-date, proof reading materials and researching.
Tax invoices, quotations, emails, customer service and building knowledge. I must admit that working for my father was difficult. He pushed me to my limits making sure that every chance of a break, was making me work. I appreciate the push Dad.
Being a class rep taught me how to create a collaborative environment, acting as a problem solver for issues that arose and being personally relatable to classmates in order to provide strong and knowledgable feedback for the lecturers and department to improve on.
As an invited member of this group, my role is to represent the YES alumni community. I help shape strategic goals and activities by providing feedback and ideas and contribute to the vibrancy and effectiveness of this nationwide network.
Handling social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, websites and handling events, media coverage was part of my role of marketing. AESIR is a collection of 10 University Clubs, coming together to organise massive events for students. I was a representative for ESA Club, ensuring that huge events ran smoothly acting as a PR for AESIR.
Customer service, knowledgeable and communication skills. Understanding our history of how we became the city of sails, I was responsible for giving tours around, helping tourists, and on occasion boating experience.
These aren't necessarily qualifications, but events that have had a major influence on my life in more ways than one. This includes:
Meeting a network of friends, finding a mentor, working as an insurance door salesman for a month, consulting new startups, helping to organise TEDxAuckland 2017, being a part of Shwoop as a web developer and starting a startup RippL and winning awards!
It was rewarding completing a Cybersecurity Virtual Case hosted by PWC as it helped teach invaluable skills such as research and understanding business environments. The core practical modules completed included integrated information defense, risk assessment, IT System Security baseline and Network segmentation.
I was fortunate enough to be asked to partake in a UoA startup that focuses on connecting people with interactive games, augmented reality and awesome prizes (like a scholarship from UoA!). I was responsible for web development, media and strategy.
RippL was nominated as part of national finalists throughout New Zealand startup ideas hosted by Young Enterprise Scheme. We are happy to be one of the few to have been flown to Wellington for this event. Alongside this, winning "Thinking Big" awards.
Our start-up (RippL) was fortunate enough to be picked as one of the top 10 finalists for the Wearables category in 2017 amongst 150+ applicants, being awarded grants and experience to partnering networks of Callaghan.
RippL was invited to speak in a Kea Inspire conference in 2017 about our innovative idea, and our inspiration that age doesn't matter.
Earning the Silver award in 2018, I was fortunate enough to go on days adventure of hiking through NZ's beautiful outdoors, volunteering at different organisations and partaking in many activities.
